Dramatis Personae (About Me)

The Retired Bridgeburner.

Hannah. 25. British.

Tea monster. Book worm. Tolkien and Malazan fanatic. Boundless inquiring mind. Heavy metal fan. Spoony.

Spent far too much time slaying dragons instead of attending to her studies.

In my early twenties I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Interstitial Cystitis, and some time later I decided to document my experiences for a number of reasons. Firstly I hoped to add my voice to the communities already in existence, because everyone's voice is important when so little is known about the variety of so-called "invisible illnesses" we face. I also thought that writing it all out might be cathartic for me, as I've always been more eloquent when writing than when speaking.

Mostly though I think I finally became fed up of my health and overall existence being judged on the terms of others rather than my own. I then realised it would never change unless I spoke out and did something about it. The Retired Bridgeburner, named for a joke between fellow Malazan Book of the Fallen fans was born from this.

Everyone has a voice, and each voice is important. All experiences are valid, whether they tie up to the norm or not. Diagnosed or still searching, mild or severe, all are invited and welcome. I ask only that you come to this page with an open mind and some manners. This is for the most part a very upbeat place, and I would like it to remain that way.

Things you may or may not need to know about me:

  • I am one inch too tall to be a hobbit (according to the height limits set for scale doubles in the latest films). I am unsure whether I am disappointed with this or not.
  • I moved to historic Jorvik in 2013 because there weren't enough Vikings in my life.
  • My partner and I own a car called the Tardis. We are still figuring out how to time travel to beat motorway traffic.
  • I find shoe shopping to be a terrifying experience. Femininity does not come easily.
  • Making me a cup of tea is a fast way to friendship. Milk, no sugar.
  • My name is Hannah but both parents call me Bob. Those who have seen Blackadder II will understand this reference.
  • Most of the post titles on this blog reference films, games, music or more likely books. See the "too much time slaying dragons" comment.

Enjoy your stay, I encourage comment and discussion and you can find ways to contact me over on the Green Moranth page.
